Captcha Time

Captcha time is capturing my time.
Time is that valuable commodity that we all seem to want more of.  So why are we wasting time trying to fill out this ridiculous captcha word verification that Blogger has now installed?   So many bloggers are posting about it or commenting about it on posts.  And here is my little rant as well.  I even posted about this well over a year ago.
Photobucket
Captcha is supposed to prove you aren't a bot or spammer.
Unfortunately it is stopping a lot of bloggers who aren't bots or spammers from leaving comments on posts.
Why?  you might ask ... because it uses up valuable time.  You invariably have to refresh the thing a few times before you think you get the word right and even then it isn't always right.  How can you tell if it is an r then an n or an m as the letters are so close together and of course they are twisted in all directions.

If you are so worried about bots and spammers why don't you just put the moderation option into effect?.  My goodness some of you have word verification and moderation.  Twice the time and twice the effort.

I have favourite blogs that I love to visit, but if that captcha thing comes up I leave without commenting.  I'm sorry but I just don't have the time to go through that ridiculous procedure.

Through a bit of research I found out you can't turn off word verification if you are using Blogger in Draft.  You first have to uncheck that box and go back to the old Blogger format.  Then go into the settings for comments and turn it off.  Once you have done that you can go back and check that little box again to go back to Blogger in Draft.

I have also found that spammers will not usually spam the most recent post but will go back a few posts and leave their nasty links.  If you choose moderation you can choose it for always or sometimes.   You get choose how old the post will be and moderation kicks in.  I think I have mine set to 3 days.  And guess what, if one spam comment gets through, it really isn't that big a deal.  You can just go to the comment section and in one little click you can delete it.

So if your blog is using word verification or captcha won't you please consider turning it off. You might find you get more comments that way. And you will save your visitors a lot of time.

  1. Thank you Linda - well said! The new 2 word verification is frustrating, annoying and wasting my time. I don't want to be rude, but I'm to the point where I'm not going to leave a comment either.
I've never used the moderation option but of course would consider it if I start to get spam.

    1. Judith, even if I got a lot of spam I would not use the captcha word verification. Moderation will stop spam from showing on your blog. You just approve the ones you want.

  2. I agree they are very annoying! I had to go back and check my settings to make sure I didn't have it on my blog. Whew!

  3. I turned it off last fall, and, so far, I have not noticed any spamming. So, I will keep it that way unless something changes. The new captcha is even more difficult. I am not able to decipher it many times. I wish there was a better way...

    1. Moderation lets you delete any comments you think are spam.

  4. I think one or two comments slipped in since I started my blog. As you pointed out, it was very simple to delete them. I like your watch and clock collage and how it fits your post so beautifully.

  5. Great post and I couldn't agree more!

  6. My gosh, I so agree. I hope my blog does not have Captcha. I never thought to check by clicking to comment from another blog. But to make matters worse, WP bloggers cannot always leave comments on Blogger blogs anymore. Something recently was changed and my comment will not be accepted unless I go through Google, WHICH I ABSOLUTELY HATE. The problem with Captcha too is you can hardly read the stupid things. It really is a time waster.

  7. I'm with you on the Captcha thing. If I see that thing when leaving a comment I just move on. So annoying and pointless!

  8. I am totally with you on this Linda. I do not like having to figure out what that scribble is just to leave a comment. I am taking the tag and putting it on my blog too. V

  9. So glad you posted about this! It is off on my blog, and I hate trying to guess what those squiggly words are. You are right - it takes a lot of time - especially when you have to try two or three times! I hope most people will turn theirs off.

  10. Hi Linda, I completely agree with you! The major thing we struggle with seems to be these 'automated' comment systems that litter our comment sections. Most of these can be identified quickly because they are template driven and grammatically atrocious. So, it's a little bit of extra work to sift through those but well worth it!

    1. I find that Blogger filters pick up most of those types of comments.

  11. Having more than one blog - I found it's possible to turn it off in the way you explain for some blogs but with others, the option to go back to the old mode, even briefly, is no longer and option, so if WV is already active, you're stuck, there's no way to turn it off. However, when I did turn it off where I could, I immediately had spam. Google caught it so it didn't appear on the blog. That was good. But it came through to my email box so I had to go and check it hadn't been published . . . and I was going backwards and forwards and gave up and turned the WV on again. (The other option would have been to use comment moderation but I don't like that - though I agree most spam goes to older posts.) The new double (and doubly difficult) form is especially hard when people use the 'embedded' comments for Blogger. That's already cumbersome but there are sometimes now three sliders to adjust . . . and it is slow . . . and annoying . . . and no wonder people are cross.

    1. If it works for you Lucy, then you need to use it. Embedded comments did cause lots of problems but I like the threaded comments feature it offers. I'd be interested in knowing if you still have about the same number of comments with the captcha option. And how do you find the embedded comments cumbersome? I'd like to know how to make my blog more user friendly. Thanks for stopping by.

    2. Quickly dropping back to say I realise that, because my blog settings etc. all looked the same, I hadn't realised one had the little tiny box ticked and the other didn't - so I missed it . . . so I've been able to turn off the Captcha on Loose and Leafy after all. I'll see what happens! As for number of comments - I don't know. There didn't seem to be a drop - but that doesn't mean people wouldn't have got fed up with it in time. I know it was affecting me! I also know some people don't like the old WV either but I've never found that a problem. It didn't influence which blogs I did or didn't visit. There's no way I'd remember who has it turned on and who hasn't. About the embedded system - that is only a problem when there is WV. Without it, it's fine.

    3. I'll be back to leaving some comments at Loose and Leafy. I loved the fungi photos you recently put up and following a tree is a great idea. Perhaps you will get more comments now with captcha gone. Do you have a problem with the embedded comments on my blog? or is it just the embedded ones with captcha? Thanks for stopping back to check in. This is one of the features I love about embedded comments, I can have a mini conversation with visitors.

  12. Yes, I have always disliked this, but now it is even more ridiculous and time consuming!

  14. hahaha, you really said your feelings in some paragraphs! I am not putting it in mine, but suddenly last week perhaps a few of my commenters told me to remove it, i was so guilty but thankful. However, i have to search long on how to remove them, fortunately I was able to. And maybe it was your post where i saw about the 3day allowance, so in mine i put 14days. Even if i have been blogging for more than 3 yrs, i am still not very familiar with the knobs and twitches here, so i always had difficulties. So my page is not really lovely and maybe already boring for staying the same throughout time.

About the post, i almost posted the same photo as yours, because i want to be naughty today, i would also almost posted the cover of TIME magazine, LOL. But i love the way you perfectly said your feelings.

    1. Others have told me it is hard to get rid of Andrea. Hopefully you don't go around taking images from others to post on your blog, feeling naughty or not.

  15. Hi Linda - you are so right about the word verification. I hate it. Overcome it if I'm trying to really follow the blog. But if it's just a casual visit, I'll move on without commenting. And to me, comments are the way I can see if there are visitors to my blog. They are the "friends" that keep coming back - like you.

Love the juxtaposition of the "time" challenge for your Word for Wednesday.

  17. Well put Linda, it's been a pet peeve of mine for such a long time also, I really intensely dislike it!!! It's funny out of all the comments that I had about the post on word verification, I think there were only one or two that said they would keep it. If everyone hates it so much, why do they have it on?

    1. I think only one of my comments says they have left if on. I guess if it works for them, then use it. But moderation does the same thing. Some say they don't like all the comments coming to their inbox, but I'm wondering if they ever go and read the comments left.
I have no idea why so many are still using it, but the odd person has said they didn't have it before and it just showed up and now they can't get rid of it.

  18. so glad to hear you are not using word verification...so much of a hassle these days to get it right...

I really appreciate you stopping by and taking time out of your busy day to leave a comment.

No word verification here but if the post is over a few days old your comment will have to be approved. It seems those spammers choose older posts in hopes their lurid messages will show up.

Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy your day.
