The pattern is a simple one. Cast on 26 stitches using 3.25 mm needles. Knit 18 rows of k1, p1 to make the ribbing. I did the ribbing a bit longer than most patterns call for so that the mittens could be tucked right up inside the coat sleeves and not pulled out easily. You could also turn the ribbing up into a cuff. Once the ribbing is done, switch to a slightly larger needle of 3.5 mm and knit in stocking stitch (one row knit, one row purl) until the knitting is about 13 cm. long (about 5.25inches). Then do the decrease rows. First row is k2, k2tog and repeat till last 2 stitches and k2. Next row is purl. Next row is k1, k2tog and repeat, k1 and then another purl row. Last row is k2tog. I believe there are 3 left at the end so I knitted all 3 together.
When you are knitting up your own pattern it is easy to get to the end of a row and find an extra stitch ... so you knit them together. If you are missing a stitch you can a an extra one in the middle of the row. I'm much better at knitting the pattern than writing it down. So if you do try my pattern and find a mistake, don't get mad at me, just let me know and I'll see if I can resolve the problem. Or better still, maybe you can resolve the problem for me.

Such lovely mittens - cute baby blue colour! I haven't knitted for a long time but I can feel the itch in my fingers and I have loads of yarn in the basement, so ...
ReplyDeleteThey are so cute, I never heard of thumbless mittens, I bet they are very warm. I have been meaning to mention, I like your bird banner.
ReplyDeleteThumbless mitts are perfect for babies, then you don't have to worry about fitting thumbs into tiny spaces. They are so much easier to put on.
DeleteThanks for your comment about my bird header.
So cute - and thanks for the pattern. I'll be using it to make some mittens for my new born great-neice!!
ReplyDeleteGive the pattern a try, I'm not the best at writing down patterns, much better at knitting.
DeleteLove that soft blue!

Very talented, love that shade of blue too.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
They are so cute! My sister-in-law used to make them for our little ones, along with hats and booties. The little mitts helped keep our new babies from scratching their faces too.
ReplyDeleteWish I could learn how to knit. You are creative.
