Fence Shadow
On a lovely sunny day a little while ago I took this fence shadow photo. January has brought us such a variety of weather ... mild, dreary, foggy, icy, sunny, dull, snowy and cold.

The sun cast the pointy shadow of the fence onto the newly fallen snow. I even managed to capture the doves shadow as he sat under the bird feeder. There are lots of other shadows there too.Now this isn't just a piece of fence that sits in the garden. It has many purposes. Three compost bins sit behind this fence and get plenty of sun to 'cook' the compost over the summer. I also use this fence to display all the old and broken garden tools that I have a hard time parting with. In front of the fence is a garden that grows various perennials and biennials ... hollyhocks, day lilies, bee balm, Jerusalem artichokes, Egyptian Walking Onions, chives. The fence gives some much needed shade to those plants. The edges of the garden are trimmed with old cement blocks that have trailing sedum planted in the holes. The fence is also a spot for birds. They perch on the fence while waiting a turn at the feeders in the nearby trees. During the spring, summer and fall months there is a bird bath in the center of the garden The bird house that sits on the post is usually home to a wren, and of course I call her Jenny. The fence is in full view from the kitchen and deck so it gives us hours of entertainment and viewing pleasure.
I'm joining in with Friday Fences, Sunlit Sunday, and Shadow Shot Sunday.
Thanks for visiting. Have a great weekend.
Good morning, Linda, from Virginia!
ReplyDeleteI stopped by to thank you for visiting today and leaving a comment for me.
I LOVE this photo! It's just beautiful with the shadows, especially that you caught the dove's shadow too.
I'm going to check on some of your other posts - hope you'll visit again soon!

Hi Dianna, these link parties lead us to blogs we might never find on our own. Thanks for visiting today.
DeleteGood Morning, Linda
ReplyDeleteThat one small fence certainly serves a multitude of purposes. Perhaps you'll post a photo of it when all of the perennials are in bloom. It's snowing here now, which is very pretty, but no sun to be seen like in your photo.

Hello Linda
ReplyDeleteYou've made your compost area an interesting site. I love the fence with the odds and ends of gardening things and it does cast a lovely shadow.
Judith
As a lover of nature and the birds, etc. I can appreciate your view.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't take much to warm our souls and marvel at what is free for the taking in our universe.
(((hugs)))Pat
I love your fence and the multiple uses it has. Enjoy the winter weekend. Pamela
ReplyDeleteWe have an old picket fence sitting in the middle of our yard - slowly we are moving it to surround the veggie garden and compost area. I like how you have all the tools and watering can hanging from yours - will do the same to ours.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, Linda. As always.
Look at those tools, so cute!
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday!
What a delightful fence. So much character!!
ReplyDeleteFunny how such a simple object (the fence) can look so spectacular! Great photo x
ReplyDeleteHello Linda girl ! that is a really cute fence with so many purposes ! I would not have caught the dove's shadow if you hadn't of mentioned it;-) The shadows are nice and sharp and so many little different ones. Hey did you get that lightening and thunder Thursday night during the snow squalls ? It was amazing !! I have only seen that happen once before .. kind of eerie !! LOL
ReplyDeleteJoy : )
No thunder snow for us Joy, just a big snow squall. I bet it was great to see.
DeleteYour fence looks as though it would afford much joy in all seasons!
ReplyDeleteBOOKISH SHADOWS
Shadow, shadow in my path,
You are not the Grapes of Wrath;
And yet when I hear your hums,
Something Wicked This Way Comes!
May your darkness turn to light
Like The House of Mirth, all right?
May all sadness drift away—

what an awesome space you have created...and thanks for your story to accompanying it!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, using that fence! I might be able to use a piece of fencing the same way!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had a wren in my yard. I go to great lengths to attract birds to my yard-but so far only sparrows...
Dear Linda,
ReplyDeleteThis is my first visit to your space here and I am charmed by your post on your little piece of fence. How lovely an image you paint of it with its flowers and birds to keep it company during more clement seasons. Its shadow falling on the snow is so pretty.
Stephanie
