My blog, like life, is a mixture of all sorts of things . . . gardening, nature, crafts and photography. Right now it's the time of year when the focus is more on the non-gardening things I love to do. But I'm always thinking and dreaming of gardening.

Fence Shadow

On a lovely sunny day a little while ago I took this fence shadow photo.  January has brought us such a variety of weather ... mild, dreary, foggy, icy, sunny, dull, snowy and cold.

The sun cast the pointy shadow of the fence onto the newly fallen snow.  I even managed to capture the doves shadow as he sat under the bird feeder. There are lots of other shadows there too.
Now this isn't just a piece of fence that sits in the garden.  It has many purposes.  Three compost bins sit behind this fence and get plenty of sun to 'cook' the compost over the summer.  I also use this fence to display all the old and broken garden tools that I have a hard time parting with.  In front of the fence is a garden that grows various perennials and biennials ... hollyhocks, day lilies, bee balm, Jerusalem artichokes, Egyptian Walking Onions, chives. The fence gives some much needed shade to those plants.  The edges of the garden are trimmed with old cement blocks that have trailing sedum planted in the holes.  The fence is also a spot for birds.  They perch on the fence while waiting a turn at the feeders in the nearby trees.  During the spring, summer and fall months there is a bird bath in the center of the garden  The bird house that sits on the post is usually home to a wren, and of course I call her Jenny.  The fence is in full view from the kitchen and deck so it gives us hours of entertainment and viewing pleasure.

I'm joining in with Friday FencesSunlit Sunday, and Shadow Shot Sunday.

Thanks for visiting. Have a great weekend.

  2. Good Morning, Linda
That one small fence certainly serves a multitude of purposes. Perhaps you'll post a photo of it when all of the perennials are in bloom. It's snowing here now, which is very pretty, but no sun to be seen like in your photo.

  6. We have an old picket fence sitting in the middle of our yard - slowly we are moving it to surround the veggie garden and compost area. I like how you have all the tools and watering can hanging from yours - will do the same to ours.

    Great photos, Linda. As always.

I wish I had a wren in my yard. I go to great lengths to attract birds to my yard-but so far only sparrows...

  17. Dear Linda,

This is my first visit to your space here and I am charmed by your post on your little piece of fence. How lovely an image you paint of it with its flowers and birds to keep it company during more clement seasons. Its shadow falling on the snow is so pretty.
