My blog, like life, is a mixture of all sorts of things . . . gardening, nature, crafts and photography. Right now it's the time of year when the focus is more on the non-gardening things I love to do. But I'm always thinking and dreaming of gardening.

Cathedral Grove

An absolutely amazing place to visit on Vancouver Island, British Columbia is Cathedral Grove.  This provincial park preserves a section of the old growth trees in the western rainforest.  There are massive Douglas Fir and Red Cedar trees, some as much as 800 years old.   We were fortunate to pay a visit to Cathedral Grove on our trip to Vancouver Island in November 2011.

And looking up was an amazing experience.

One of the many things that fascinated me the most was the moss covering all the trees, rocks, and fences.

The fence appears dwarfed by the gigantic trees.

But it was real size.  But I think the best fence photo is this one.

There is a local tradition of putting pumpkins along the fences at the entrance to Cathedral Grove at Hallowe'en.  We were there in mid November so all the pumpkins were still out in full force.  What a great site.  There were pumpkins at various places along the road leading up to Cathedral Grove as well.  No one seems to know how this tradition started and you can find a few versions on the Internet, but I hope it continues for a long time to come.

It's time for Friday Fences, so hop over and see some other great fence photos.

  1. I love those huge trees, and the pumpkins all along the fence!!! I am not sure what I would think of all that moss, but it has got to be better than the freezing rain that is keeping me inside this morning. I am also in zone 5b, Ontario...

  5. Beautiful, I still remember the height of the trees so spectacular.

Did you see me wave on your train ride? I was the one standing beside the giant White Rock, on the beach, LOL. Your train ride would have taken you right past my favourite spot to shoot the morning sunrise...

  14. What a magical place to visit--almost prehistoric in feel. And your photos captured the age and lushness of this forest. I too notice moss growth and have never seen it so thick. Pumpkin tradition should be continued.
