My blog, like life, is a mixture of all sorts of things . . . gardening, nature, crafts and photography. Right now it's the time of year when the focus is more on the non-gardening things I love to do. But I'm always thinking and dreaming of gardening.

Freezy Friday

Today we are getting our first taste of a snowy winter day.  We've had sprinkles of snow since just before Christmas, but overnight the white fluffy stuff arrived and it is supposed to continue coming down most of the day.  There is a bit of freezing drizzle coming down right now with freezing rain in the forecast for this evening.

It looks like it will be time to get out the snow shovels and clear off the driveway, walks and deck.  Well, not right now, but maybe later on.   One of the wonderful advantages of being retired is that we can do things when we want to, not because the clock says it is almost time to be at work.

It's a perfect day for watching the world through the windows, relaxing, some reading and some crafting.

I recently checked out some gardening books just for a day like today - Get Growing by Frankie Flowers and Grow Great Grub by Gayla Trail. So the gardener side of me is going to curl up with a cozy afghan and dream about gardening.   It's time to get some ideas for gardening season.  I'm looking forward to getting more done in the garden this year as I was curtailed by knee surgery last spring.

Today is also the perfect day to get some hooky time in.  The crafty side of me is working on an afghan trying to use up some of my stash yarn.  That is why the stripes are all different sizes, it just depends how much yarn I have of each colour.

It's a simple pattern of one row of double crochet, followed by one row of 2 double crochet, chain one, skip one dc and repeat.  I already made a stash busting afghan out of the blues left over from little boy knitting and crochet.  This one is pinks and co-ordinating colours from little girl knitting and crochet.

Let's see, what else can I do on a freezy Friday?  I will go for a walk, but not outside, but on the treadmill.  I can watch the world through the window while I walk in comfort. And I think a mug of hot chocolate after that walk will be perfect. Who knows, perhaps even a nap might be taken.

What do you do on a snowy day?

  1. I think this would be a good time to watch the world through your window Linda. Snuggling up with my knitting or reading a book, sounds perfect.
Here in the UK its wet and very windy and cold, we are not forecast for any snow, and if we were it is never as much as what you have. I believe up in the high ground of England they have snow though.
I wish you and your family a Happy New Year.

  2. I'm glad to see you got some snow too. Unfortunately I think we'll lose most of ours this weekend as the temperatures rise again to 5 degrees Celsius for New Years. Oh well - there's lots of time to enjoy the same sort of things on your agenda - reading, blogging, knitting, relaxing. Looking forward to a quiet day after having a houseful of kids and grandkids this week.
    Happy New Year!

  5. I expect this snow will vanish over the weekend too Heather, as temperatures of +5 Celsius are in the forecast.

Happy New Year to you and your family Julie.

Hi Lona, we seem to have had lots of rain before the holidays too. I'm sure this is just a taste of winter weather to come.

Hi Kath, crofters yarn sounds interesting. Looking forward to hearing what you create with it.

  6. Linda
You have a little more snow than us, but we are supposed to get more and get colder. So I'm crossing my fingers.
It was so nice to be able to see all the animal prints in the snow on our walk today-finally.
I love the colors in your afghan. I really need to work on my crocheting skills, then maybe I can try really making something besides pan scrubbers!
I've enjoyed getting to visit here this past year! Have a blessed new year!

  7. We don't get many snowy days here but when we do I like to go out in the garden and take photos. Then come indoors and watch from the window in the warm. It is a perfect time to catch up on reading especially about gardening.

  8. Linda Happy New Year ! (soon coming eh ?)
You have perfect things to occupy yourself for this nasty weather .. we need to get out tomorrow but I think we should be safe with the city trucks out and about with the freezing rain warning .. we also are so lucky not to have to travel .. no deadlines to meet etc .. it makes life a lot easier for sure.
Hope your garden year coming will be much more satisfying too !!
    Joy : )

  9. Ah! I like the life style that you are describing. Lucky for me that I do work from home but no such luck for my dear hubby. Watching the snow come down is one of the favorite thing to do. And, then when it stops, go out and play a while in the snow. Then, come inside and snuggle up on the sofa with something hot to eat/drink.

  10. HAHA! It's funny, when we do do get snow here in ol' Blighty the whole country seems to grind to a halt! Everyone moans n' groans...Boo! Hiss! Me? I love it (from the comfort of my warm chair by the window...watching the kids) xx

  11. Brrrr.... Looks cold! Reading gardening books sounds wonderful, and I love your multi-colored afghan. It is very pretty. What do I do on a snowy day? I run outside to take pictures before it melts, because our snow only lasts a very short time! :) Happy New Year!
