Black Oystercatcher

One of the many things we did while on vacation in BC was look for new

They have many different species of birds than we get in Ontario, and of course many are the same.
One bird we spotted while walking along Whiffin Spit in Sooke was the Black Oystercatcher, certainly one we had not seen before, even on our previous trip to BC.

They belong to a group of wading birds and are about the size of the crow.
But that seems to be where the similarities stop.  Look at those long pinkish legs and feet and just look at that long reddish beak.  And what about those eyes!
We only saw one making its way along the stony shore of the Pacific Ocean, and every now and then he would stop and peck down into the rocks.  We have no idea if it was catching oysters but it did seem to like what it found.  We were thrilled be able to check this off our birding list.  It is also a great bird to share with Camera Critters and Tuesday Tweets.

Thanks for visiting.
