Slices and Sandwiches

The fresh, field tomatoes are abundant at the market and road side stands now.   So-o-o-o delicious.  It makes my mouth water just posting this photo.

Just slice, add to buttered bread, add a sprinkle of salt and you have created a delicious sandwich.
I'll be buying a big basket full soon and freezing this freshness to use in soups and stews in the winter months.
Enjoy the fresh fruit and veggies from the market and road side stands today.

  1. Can I ask why you don't grow your own - or are you just a flower gardener

  2. I do grow tomatoes, mostly the smaller varieties this year. I had knee surgery in May and wasn't able to do all the things in the garden that I usually do. Plus I find that when the field tomatoes are out at the market they are so reasonably priced and I couldn't grow that many in my garden for that price (taking into consideration the seeds/plants, watering, fertilizer and time)

  3. Linda it is a wonderful time of the year with all the fresh veggies available. My fav sandwich BLT .. I grow tomatoes but only 4 plants that do for eating ; also buy more tomatoes to freeze or can..
Nice artisan bread in your photo...

  4. I grew some tomatoes one year in pots and they did quite well, I don't have a large garden but it is quite a sun trap.
I love sliced tomatoes on top of cheese on toast lightly done under the grill, lovely.

  5. So, I'm not the only one who eats tomato sandwiches! My family always looks at me funny when I do that.

I'm going to have to buy some tomatoes from farmers markets this year - my tomato plants failed miserably due to my negligence in watering early in the season and then hornworms later.

  6. Same here. Lots of fresh tomatoes in the hypermarkets. They are less than half the normal price now. So I stored quite a lot of them in the fridge. In my garden however, I have a few plants but only one pathetic tomato.

  7. Hi Rosemary, yummy BLT sandwiches, so delicious.

Hi Julie, tomatoes on top of cheese on toast sounds so good.

I can eat tomato sandwiches every day Brandi. Your family doesn't know what they are missing if they don't have them.

Hi one, yes veggies are so reasonably priced at this time of the year.

Thanks for stopping by everyone. Enjoy those tomatoes.

  9. Hi Linda
Your sandwich is one of my favourites, the only difference is I like basil in it too.
Between the tomatoes and fresh cucumbers, I alternate them every day for a sandwich and now that the corn is in - every night for dinner!

  11. I grow tomatoes, but I also buy them to try different varieties. Sometimes tomatoes of the same variety taste totally different even in a different zone. Hope your knee is feeling better and thanks for this easy lunch idea. I honestly have never tried this combo.

It is such a simple yet very tasty sandwich GirlRural.
