Canna Attract Hummers

I love canna in the garden.  For the past couple of years I have grown them in pots as it is so much easier to get the root out for storage over the winter.  These 3 pots started out on the lowest level of my pot garden.

The foilage and blooms didn't disappoint me this year.  I now have the pots positioned near the hummingbird and oriole feeders now they are blooming..  One of the good things about growing plants in pots is that you can move them around whenever you feel like it.

And now the blooms are attracting the hummingbirds many times a day.  They particularly like watering time and enjoy the mist of the hose.

Here you can see the female ruby throated hummingbird checking out the flowers.

I'm sharing my photos with Cottage Floral Thursday and Fertilizer Friday and Camera Critters.

Take time to enjoy the garden today.

  3. Cannas are great plants, I have four or five different kinds and thank goodness I don't have to lift them to overwinter.

  4. Wonderful idea - Cannas in pots! I didn't grow any this year, because of my disability. I always find it too difficult to lift them. Must try this next year!

  5. Hi hetty, I went to growing canna in pots because I was unable to dig them from the ground. Recent knee surgery limits my work in the garden. But pots can be tipped and the contents easily come out. Sift through the dirt, find the roots, put the dirt back in the pot for another year.

  6. Just beautiful. I have tried and tried to get a good hummingbird shot and can't.
That's a good idea about using the pots-so much easier to rearrange wherever you choose.

  15. Humming birds are so pretty. I remember one year I was so excited that I had seen one in my backyard, not something that happens every day. This summer I saw another when we were camping, really amazing little birds.

  16. Interesting. I've never seen a hummingbird on my cannas. I'll have to watch extra close now. I love cannas in pot. They have such a commanding presence.

  18. Great hummer shots! I grow Canna too but in the ground. They spread and I find them popping up in unexpected places. Maybe I should grow them in pots to contain them. Either way they are beautiful!

  19. Hi Linda
Great capture of the hummingbirds! I haven't grown cannas since the squirrels dug in the pots in spring and ate parts of the bulbs.
