Down by the Bay in February

Last week we had some nice weather, in fact one of the days was almost spring like.  We went for a walk down by the bay to check out the ducks.

Did you know there are many terms to describe a group of ducks and it depends on what they are doing and what type of duck they are.   I found out that a group of mallard ducks is called a sord when on the ground but called a flock when in the air.

There was an open channel of water and there were a lot of ducks gathered there. How lovely to hear them all "talking".

It was a lovely sunny morning and I wasn't necessarily in the right position to avoid some glare in the photos.  But I did manage to capture some reflections of a couple of the ducks that were off to the side of the main group.

Just look at those orange legs and the lovely shadows and reflections in the cold water.  You wouldn't catch me putting my toe in the water let alone both feet.  Nature never ceases to amaze me.

I'm joining in with Weekend Reflections and Shadow Shot Sunday.  I'm also linking to Camera Critters with my sord of ducks.

  4. I love the photos of the ducks! We have lots of them here, too, and it's always fun to watch them enjoying the sun and "talking" to each other! Hope you have a great weekend!

  5. Lovely duck photos, Linda. I agree - icy water is not for my feet, but the ducks seem happy.
I used to live across the lane from a duck pond, so I have lots of delightful ducky memories.
The word "sord" is new to me, however, so that comes under the heading of "learn something new every day"! Thanks!

  10. Sord, eh? That's an interesting word! I took photos of ducks this week too. :)

  11. I had no idea there were different group names. Sord is a new word for me, too! I do like to see large groups of ducks all hanging out doing their own thing.

  14. Great shots of the ducks and their watery shadows! I love them - we had 2 pet ducks for several years and they were so comical. The pair even had young.

  15. We have swans and ducks in front of our place at all times except this time of year. I believe they are somewhere under an eiderdown comforter. Nice to see your brave 'sord'!

  16. You learn something new every day! I had no idea there were different words, depending on variety and occupation. I like ducks, they always appear busy and cheerful, and I love hearing them chatter away.

  19. These are all great shots, but I especially love the last one with the strong shadows and reflections. I'm like you. My little toes couldn't stand the cold water, but glad the ducks like it. Must have been nice to see them gather. Good stuff!

    Peace

  25. They do "talk" a lot and their chatter is what most of us think of when we think of duck sounds though other ducks can have much different calls.
