Supposedly when the fly gets close to the bag it sees its reflection through its many eyes and gets scared off. Does it work, I don't really know, but I'm giving it a try. I have one hanging by the back door and one on each of the garage windows which always fill up with flies for some reason or other. I Googled this tip and found out that many people are trying it and there are both positive and negative comments.

I've never tried this, but it sounds very interesting. Sometimes the most unusual ideas work. In any case, it's worth a try.
ReplyDeleteI've been feeling like all the flies in my neighborhood decided to come to my house and stay this week. Think I'll give it a try, THANKS!
ReplyDeleteI'll let you know how I do.
Hi Linda
ReplyDeleteYes, this does work! A couple of years ago while walking along a beach we stopped in at one of the beach snack bars and here were all these plastic bags of water attached around the overhang of the whole thing.
After staring at them for awhile, I had to ask. It was to keep the flies away from the food and guests and there weren't any around us.
Same sort of thing can work for wasps with a paper bag blown up and tied above a doorway. They think it is another wasp's territory and will stay away. Nowadays you can buy the fake cloth nests. The paper bag thing I saw and was told about was by an old farmer 10 years or so ago.

I does seem to do the trick Judith. I have those fake wasp nests as well. Glad to hear this tip was being used at a snack bar. Thanks for sharing that with me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tip! I HATE flies. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Linda. Well girl that is a new one on me. It will be nice to see if it works for you. The metal one is cute regardless LOL!
ReplyDeleteThat's a neat idea. I wonder if it works.
ReplyDeleteLinda, I have not yet tried this technique. However, when we were visiting the Azores Islands, every house, every shop, every restaurant, had a similar bag of water (sans pennies) hanging over every doorway. When asked, the locals said the same thing, the flies see their reflection, and fly away from the door. Their bags though were hung directly in the doorway, off to one side (so you didn't hit your head). To be honest, I never really noticed a fly problem in any of the houses or restaurants we visited, so maybe there's something to it!
ReplyDeleteHi Curbstone, thanks for sharing your story. I'm glad to know this tip works.
ReplyDeleteYes, it works. In our neighboring county fair, they always have them hanging in the Lutheran Food stand. It is not enclosed and you can sit around all sides of their booth outside. They hang them from the roof. There have never been any flies around there. (They also have the best homemade pies there.)
