A Pet Peeve for Thursday Thoughts

My pet peeve thoughts for Thursday.

I've got to say that a pet peeve of mine is the word verification that Blogger uses.
If you have your comments set to moderation, why on earth do you have the word verification on?
You have to approve the comments anyways, so just reject the ones you don't want and save visitors the hassel of filling in the word verification.
It just takes up time keying in those letters, sometimes way too much time if you don't get it right the first time.  For now I perservere but I just might have to stop leaving comments that take a long time to be accepted, especially if they get rejected the first time.
I understand those bloggers that use word verification and after entering it the comment goes directly to being published.

Another pet peeve of mine is those people (not bots) that leave comments linking to non-family content blogs.  They have a profile with nothing showing except a lot of foreign symbols. I know they don't read my posts, but just leave their nasty little message. It is so easy to hit the rejct box and they are never seen again.

How about you?  Do you have a pet peeve?

Thanks for listening today.

  2. I hear you Linda on the word verification. I have it on my blog because I don't sit on my computer all day (well, sometimes I do...shhhh) and I don't want anything nasty to show up. Maybe I'll try moderation though... who knows, eh? What else is there though?

  3. Hi Linda,
I too wasn't a fan of word verification until I learned that in many instances we are helping transcribe texts that digital readers are unable to decipher - so in effect we're helping digitize text through a system called reCAPTCHA - heard Luis von Ahn on CBC interviewed about it - his idea is that millions of folks all over the world are having to retype letters anyway to try to defeat those computers that are looking for ways to get into sites - we might as well do something useful.
I'm with you with the other nonsense - I've gotten an eye-full that I'd never wanted to see. Hope you're able to get out to enjoy the day in the garden.
    B.

  4. I am with you on this Linda. I can't remember what I want to say on a comment by the time I have jumped through all the hoops.

  5. Yes certainly the word verification. Always hated that and blogs that play music and are far so fussy that they take ages to upload.

  6. I used to not have the word verification on my blog. But when I didn't, my inbox got cluttered with spam mail posts to moderate. It was annoying. Now that I have the word verification, it filters out the fake entries.

  7. Linda I agree w/ the word verification...sometimes I wonder why am I spending so much time getting those scrammbled letters correct after numerous attempts!!Grrrr...another those spam comments advertising their business..I just hit the delete button...like magic..gone..but it is a pain having to recheck past posts..that's where they love to leave their mark! Grrr!

  8. Hi Barbarapc, I totally understand what the captcha does and it is great for those bloggers who do not moderate comments. But those that moderate can simply reject those comments when you go to your dashboard. I have a feeling that sometimes the word verification scares away more than just bots and spammers.

Hi Barbara, yes music on blogs is a pet peeve of mine too. It takes so long to load and slows down everything else. Bloggers need to realize that not everyone has DSL or high speed service.

  9. OK so why isn't it like this: you accept a follower (or friend - whatever)and then once you have accepted them they can write anytime they want to on your blog without moderation? We should get on to them at Blogger & Wordpress to make it happen!

I really appreciate you stopping by and taking time out of your busy day to leave a comment.

No word verification here but if the post is over a few days old your comment will have to be approved. It seems those spammers choose older posts in hopes their lurid messages will show up.

Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy your day.
