On our recent visit to Ottawa we stopped by to see what critters were in the Cat Sanctuary on Parliament Hill.
There is a small enclosure with a wooden structure in it that houses the stray cats on the Hill. Other animals also call this safe haven home ... racoons, groundhogs and squirrels. The Cat Sanctuary was started by Irene Desomeaux in 1970. It is now looked after by Rene Chartrand. A click on the above photo will lead you to some info on the Cat Sanctuary.

I had no idea that the Hill had a cat sanctuary. Wow! That's a terribly cool idea. :) The college I went to had the "campus cats" that were cared for... similar, but there were no shelters or anything.
ReplyDeleteYes Jenn, the Cat Sanctuary is just up from the info tent on Parliament Hill. We always have to stop there to visit and leave a small donation in the box. If you get a chance, stop by and visit it the next time you are in Ottawa.
ReplyDeleteIt's one of my favorite places in Ottawa - first disovered it back in 1993. Glad it's still going strong.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I have never heard of this, and I've been to Parliament Hill many times. I feel awful for not knowing about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to google it and see if I can make a donation by mail, and also make sure I find it next time I'm in the capitol.
wow, I don't think I've ever seen a pitch black squirrel before!

How wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI guess the cats don't mind sharing with the likes of the black squirrel and the raccoon.
(Carletta's Captures)
It looks a pleasant place for all - visitors, residents - and more than enough food to go round. Great captures!
ReplyDeleteIt gives you a real great feeling when you find out about places like these. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteI took a photo of a momma raccoon investigating my bird feeders. If you have the time to stop by, my post is right here,
Wow, that is such an amazing place! So wonderful to have a safe haven for those critters.
ReplyDeleteI didn't even know that this existed in our nation's capital! Yeah!! Thanks for the info and great pictures.
ReplyDeleteOMG Linda !
ReplyDeleteI grew through my teenage years and went to school in Ottawa (we lived in Bells Corners) and I don't think I remember anything about the sanctuary ! wow !
You got some great shots there girl : )
Awwww so many cute critters in one place. Wonderful people who run the place.
ReplyDeleteWarms the heart, doesn't it? Every time I am reminded of this story, it makes me extra proud to be a Canadian. :)
