Thud!!

No birds were hurt or damaged in creating this image

.
It's a lovely sunny day and all of a sudden you hear that THUD against the window.  A bird has been trying to fly right through the glass.  I quickly go to the door and anxiously peer out.  Thank goodness I don't see any bird laying on the deck.
But I do see the image of the bird on the glass.  The photo doesn't quite capture what I saw but I'm hoping you can see it too.

The mark of the body of the bird and the wing span is visible. The bird was no where to be found but I'm guessing it was a dove as there have been lots of them around.

  1. I have a sun room and have that happen lots. I even have the decals on windows that is supposed to keep that from happening. Most of the time it is a goldfinch, and they just get stunned but sometimes not:( We love to watch the birds and feed them when we can..

  2. A bit scary when it happens.

  3. It's a scary feeling, isn't it? Hoping the bird will be ok...not being completely certain. Usually they are, though. It's happened here before. The 'powder' left behind is a tell-tale sign, along with the wingspan, that it was most likely a dove.

  4. That Thud is a sickening sound. I heard it once too often and we finally resolved the problem with some cling stickers made especially to alert birds. They are almost invisible to us inside the home but the birds catch its reflective quality and we haven't had a bird hit since.

  5. Yup...I see the markings on the glass...almost ghostly isn't it? I once heard the dreaded thud and came out to the living room to discover a northern pygmy owl quite dead.(I made sure!) It was very sad but I gathered up this perfect tiny owl and wrapped him up and put him in the freezer. The local nature society has stuffed him and uses him for education. Apparently they like to hunt chickadees during the morning hours.

  6. Poor thing. It's shocking when a bird crashes on the window. You just hope it turns out okay.

  8. Oh my! I do have that happen here too. Once a bluebird hit it, and I ran outside since I knew the cat was nearby. I stood guard until it was able to fly again.
