What's off the shelf?

What books do you have on your gardening bookshelves?
What book have you taken off the shelf to read right now?

I've got quite a collection of gardening and nature books ... some received as gifts, some bought just because I wanted them, some were Freecycle gifts, and some are from second hand book stores.

I've tried arranging them according to various categories ... birds, wildlife, wildflowers, perennials, annuals, rock garden plants, herbs, house plants, field guides, and garden crafts.

Over the winter months I get more of these books off the shelf ... mainly just to remind myself that winter doesn't last forever. It is fascinating to read up on different plants that are already in the garden, or to find a plant that simply must go onto the wish list.

The gardening shelves also include many of the gardening magazines I've collected over the years. Many folks will argue that gardening magazines aren't worth the money you pay for them. In some respects I do agree with them, but in many others I disagree. How lovely to get home on a wintery day and find a garden magazine in the mailbox. They are full of glossy photos of plants and birds and they brighten my day.

This is one book that really hasn't even made it to the bookshelf since I received it as a gift at Christmas time. This amazing book has full page, full colour pictures of birds, lots of factual information about them and best of all ... you push the button and can listen to the bird call. it is just like bringing nature into your living room.

Isn't the birdsong book great? I reviewed it a year ago, but it seems to be even more popular this year as i've heard of a number of people receiving it as a gift.
I have so many books I have lost count now, and trying to organize them has also given me fits. They're sort of roughly organized, but part of the problem is so many huge, oversized books that don't fit onto some shelves. I've also tried arranging by author where there are two or more books by the same author, but that hasn't exactly worked either. Mostly I can find what I'm looking for, most of the time. Right now I'm still working on Life of the Soil and Christo Lloyd's last book, Exotic Planting for Adventurous Gardeners, because I've got other, non-gardening books I have to finish reading and reviewing for the Herald. Small wonder I have tired eyes all the time...;-)

I have too many gardening books.I have bought a few, but even more have been given to me.From dusty bookshelves and charity shops.I must have a contagious enthusiasm because I seem to get new books or magasines every month.
They are great for cold winter days when its too bitter outside to linger.I wander if the Rspb do the same book for the UK?
It will be like bringing the outside into your home.

I'd love to have the Birdsong Book - the idea of being able to listen to the bird call is a good one.

I have no idea how many gardening books and magazines I've collected ... they seem to be spread in various rooms, in different bookcases and piled beside my bed.

I have 'a few' gardening related books. I cataloged them all on Librarything.com

Now if a book sounds familiar to me, I can look on Librarything to see if I own it and then if I do, I can go find it on some shelf, or stack or pile somewhere.

Library Thing is great and I have a lot of my books entered there as well. You can add a widget on your blog that shows all your books. Maybe when I get mine updated I'll add it to my blog.

I have the Bird Songs book too, and I really enjoy playing with it when I'm curled up in front of my pellet (wood) stove. It would have driven my dog crazy; if she were still around, I wouldn't be allowed to listen to it.
