Birds
Pamela from Thomasburg Walks has tagged me for the Birder's Meme, that was passed on via other bloggers and started at Earth HouseHold.
What is the coolest bird you have seen from your home?
One year we saw an indigo bunting in the garden. It must of just been passing through because we didn't see it again. Of course it was gone before we were able to snap a photo of it.
If you compose lists of bird species seen, what is your favourite list and why?
I don't really keep lists of bird species, but just lists of the various birds we have seen. Cardinals are my favourite birds because of their vibrant colour and the gorgeous colouring they have. We do keep short notes with the date when we spotted specific birds in an old field guide.
If you could only bird in one place for the rest of your life, where would it be and why?
We have no desire to go to exotic places but just love watching the bird activity in and around our own home. Whenever we go for drives we are always on the lookout for different birds.
What sparked your interest in birds?
Being a gardener it is always fascinating to see what wildlife comes into your garden. From that I tried to plant various species of plants to attract birds. Birds give us so much enjoyment as we watch from the kitchen window, especially over the winter months.

Do you have a jinx bird?
I don't really think so, perhaps because we don't set off for a specific place looking for a specific bird.
Who is your favourite birder? and why?
I have the books by Roger Tory Peterson and they are very worthwhile. A local birder is Terry Sprague, who holds birding workshops each year to tell us fascinating little tidbits about our feathered friends. He writes very interesting columns for the local newspaper.

Do you tell non-birders you are a birder?
Of course I tell others that I love to watch birds. I'm not totally sure that I am a true birder, as I just enjoy all the birds that come into the garden. I don't go out of my way to track birds, but I'm always reading articles about them in the local newspaper (by Terry Sprague), I go to local seminars about birds, and I'm always listening for that unusual bird call and I'm always taking photos of the birds in the gardens. We keep the field guides and 2 pair of binoculars close at hand by the kitchen window so that we can quickly pick them up and check out the birds.
Some of my blog posts about birds:
Goldfinches
Baby Robins
Snack time for the bluejays
Chickadees
Downy Woodpecker
Bluejays and their peanut mail

Very cool! And good answers!
Fun story about the blue jays and their peanut mail. Birds are so much fun to watch! Its nice you write in your blog what you see the birds do.
Thanks for playing, Crafty.
It's a funny thing about the Indigo Bunting--such a fantastically coloured bird when viewed in the right light, just a plain dark bird otherwise (as when its singing from a tree top). I didn't know until I learned its song just how common it actually is.
That's a great photo of the Blue Jay!
