Goldfinches

The American Goldfinch
These cheeky little birds frequent the garden in all seasons. Their bright canary yellow feathers (in spring and summer) make them easy to spot. They flock to the feeders, especially before a storm, and will also flit from flower to flower in the garden looking for seeds. Here you can see them on some cosmos which have started to go to seed. They also love the sunflowers.

The short, conical beak is typical of the seed eating birds. They average about 11 cm. in length and can weight up to 11 grams. We have a couple of feeders just for these birds, one is full of black oil sunflower seeds and the other is full of nyger seed. I think they love our garden as we have a wild patch towards the back and I just let whatever wants to grow there, bloom and mature into seeds. I also grow lots of plants and leave the seed heads on over the winter so that they can find food and give us enjoyment as we watch them.
These photos were taken through the kitchen door window.

We have taken some photos of finch. I just love the color of them.
It's lovely to see them here! We had them come to our garden for years but for some reason none will stop this year? I had the niger seed feeder out all winter and just removed it last week perhaps it is time to get a new feeder and place the black oil sun seeds in it.hugs NG

Beautiful birdies.
IN preparation for upcoming Fall season, the goldfinches are raiding our niger-seed feeder right now. Your photos are lovely and have just the right texture!
Wow you're lucky. I've been trying to get a pic of mine for weeks now and they're just not cooperating.
